Getting your home ready for a new pet includes considering pet insurance.

BRINGING HOME a new pup is exciting, but it also comes with a laundry list of to-dos. Your pet will need nutritious food and treats, a bed and blankets, a leash and collar with tags and, of course, there’s the fun stuff –– toys (to please your pet) and outfits (to please you).
You’ll also need to prioritize the health and well-being of the new addition to your family. Think pet insurance. Sure, this is not the most thrilling part of pet parenting, but if Rover gets sick or injured, he’ll need attention, and having pet insurance will take care of him and ease your emotional (and financial) stress.
Picking the right pet insurance coverage can be daunting. Do your research, read plans thoroughly and pay attention to the fine print. Factor in vet bills for annual checkups as well as emergencies and any required treatment, surgery, prescriptions, referrals to specialists — and even kennel fees if, for instance, you’re unable to care for your puppy because you’re away or hospitalized. You’ll be glad you have pet insurance that provides any needed back-up or supplementary care.
And pet insurance helps cover more than unforeseen bills. Some plans — such as CAA’s Pets Plus Us, with its discounted premiums for CAA Members — include access to 24/7 advice from experts when you cannot get to your vet. For committed pet parents, that kind of peace of mind is worth every penny. CAA
