CAA’s Summer Safety Advice

Driver Safety

Whether it’s a quick drive or a summer road trip, a few smart safety habits can help keep everyone safe.

Before You Go

  • Buckle up: Ensure everyone is wearing a seat belt. Secure children in safety-approved booster or car seats.
  • Plan ahead: Set your route and navigation before leaving, share your travel plans, and map out fuel or charging stops – especially between towns.
  • Pack smart: Keep heavier items low and secured. Avoid stacking items above seatback height to reduce injury risk in sudden stops.
  • Check your vehicle: Inspect tires, battery, and top up fluids to help prevent breakdowns.
  • Bring essentials: Carry your driver’s licence, vehicle insurance, travel insurance, CAA membership card, and an emergency kit. Bring water, non-perishable snacks, blankets, flashlight and batteries, first-aid kit, tire pressure gauge, pliers, adjustable wrench, plus washer fluid, jumper cables, and flares/reflectors.
  • Stay connected: Start with a full phone charge and bring a charged power bank.

On The Road

  • Drive alert: Avoid distractions, take breaks, and adjust for weather conditions. Check the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline before you go.
  • Watch for hazards: Be cautious of wildlife at dawn and dusk, and slow down in heavy rain or on gravel where visibility and traction can change quickly.
  • Slow Down Move Over: It is the law to slow to 60 km/h for first responders (including tow truck operators, law enforcement, paramedics, firefighters, and construction crews) working on Saskatchewan highways. Visit caask.ca/slowdownmoveover.
  • Roadside safety: If you need to stop, pull well off the road, use hazards, and keep passengers away from traffic.
  • Beat the heat: Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.

RV & Towing Safety

Heading out in an RV, or towing a camper or a boat? Preparation is key.

  • Know your limits: Understand weight limits and distribute cargo evenly. Secure all items inside.
  • Do a full check: Inspect tires (including the spare), lights, brakes, mirrors, and hitch connections.
  • Adjust your driving: Allow extra stopping distance, take wider turns, watch overhead clearance, and slow down in wind or rain.

CAA’s Fuel-Efficient Driving Tips

Save fuel, money, and wear on your vehicle with these simple habits.

  • Reduce drag: Remove roof racks and unnecessary cargo.
  • Slow down: Lower speeds and steady driving use less fuel; cruise control helps in good conditions.
  • Turn it off: Avoid idling—shut off the engine if stopped for more than a minute.
  • Plan trips: Combine errands to reduce cold starts.
  • Maintain your vehicle: Proper tire pressure and regular maintenance improve efficiency.
  • Drive smoothly: Gentle acceleration, early deceleration, and less hard braking save fuel.
