From city council to the silver screen, Randy Goulden has dedicated her career to helping Yorkton shine.
By Jeremy Freed
GROWING UP ON A FARM outside of Yorkton, Randy Goulden learned the importance of pitching in early on. “You just rolled up your sleeves and did your job,” she says. At age four, she was helping her mom — a competitive curler — wash dishes at the curling rink. Goulden’s work ethic and love of her community have guided her through a career of public service, from serving as a City of Yorkton municipal councillor to numerous leadership roles in tourism, recreation and the arts. Goulden, a CAA Member, is especially gratified to serve as executive director of the Yorkton Film Festival, the longest-running film gala event in North America. As Goulden tells it, when the idea of holding a film festival in Saskatchewan was first proposed in the late 1940s, the cultural establishment in Toronto and Montreal viewed the idea with skepticism, but Yorktonians did what they do best and pulled together to make it happen. “It’s been the pride of Yorkton since 1947,” she says. “For many filmmakers, this is their first time ever being in Saskatchewan and I take pride in the hospitality that they feel here.”
With a career spanning more than five decades, Goulden remains as dedicated to her community as ever and is looking forward to passing the torch to the next generation. “We enter into public work because it’s fulfilling and it’s rewarding, but it’s also got its challenges,” she notes. “I have influenced other people, including younger people and women, to enter into community work, and I hope to see more people willing to run for office and work hard. It takes everybody to provide for this community.”

What Songs Do You Road-Trip To, Katie Tupper?
KATIE TUPPER'S MISSION IS CLEAR: To show that hometown Saskatoon and its environs have more going on musically than might be suspected. And the neo-soul singer-songwriter’s EP, Where to Find Me, makes the point perfectly. “This is everything I’m listening to now. I’m feeling very dancy, good energy,” Tupper says. “If the only thing you take from this playlist is becoming obsessed with ‘Nourished by Time,’ my job is done. I hope these songs make you feel as good as I do. Enjoy!” –Kim Hughes
